Takashimizu history began in 1944 after merging of 12 small breweries during World War II. In previous Edo period, 3 breweries, “Kikusui”, “Kokusui”, and “Hodoyoshi” out of total 12 breweries had started their sake business. Takashimizu history began in 1944 after merging of 12 small breweries during World War II. In this column, we will trace the history of 12 breweries which are the foundation of current Takashimizu one by one. We will introduce “Hodoyoshi” today as the third brewery out of 12. Hodoyoshi started its sake business in 1860 at the current Oomachi 1-Chome, Akita city. Besides sake “Hodoyoshi”, they had produced sweet white sake, mirin(Japanese cooking seasoning), and non-heat-treated soy sauces, and those were really popular. 【Brewery Open Day】

Takashimizu Brewery Open Day was held on 20th February! It had been raining since morning on that day, however, fortunately it stopped raining from the afternoon. The number of visitors reached the highest number ever 5,000 and this was 900 more people than last year, and it was a great success. In this column, we will trace the history of 12 breweries which are the foundation of current Takashimizu one by one. We will introduce “Kokusui” this time. “Kokusui” history goes back to 1837. They launched their sake brewing business at current Tegata-shin sakae machi, Akita city, and then moved to current Tegata-tanaka, Akita city during the Meiji era (1868-1912).
